Taxonomy Warehouse provides access to an extensive catalog of taxonomies, thesauri, ontologies, classification schemes and databases of company, personal and geographic names, together with an alerting service and other resource discovery features. Synapse, which has secured agreements to license and sell many of the taxonomies, also will offer value-added fulfillment services such as scheduled updates and the reformatting of taxonomies into various user-specified formats. Gale's 70,000-node subject taxonomy may be licensed or purchased in its entirety or in smaller, more specific domains such as accounting, anatomy, banking, law, computing, electronics and nearly 50 others. Updated continuously, Gale taxonomies are available independently or delivered pre-packaged in the Synaptica thesaurus management software application. Access to the directory is free. "We developed Taxonomy Warehouse to help businesses discover how they can employ taxonomies to improve their competitive edge through faster and more accurate access to digital information and assets," Said Dave Clarke, president and chief technology officer of Synapse. "At the beginning of the 21st century we have terra-bytes of digitized information and global networks connecting millions of computers, but finding specific information is more than ever like looking for a needle in a haystack. Since 1995, Synapse has been providing domain expertise and software solutions that leverage taxonomies to unlock vital company information often hidden in corporate internets and other repositories." "Businesses and organizations are harnessing the power of controlled thesauri, taxonomies and indexes to produce state-of-the-art information retrieval systems and products," said Scott Smith, vice president of business development at Gale. "As an information provider with nearly 50 years of hands-on experience developing taxonomies, Gale is well-positioned to help companies uncover pertinent information that will lead to timely business decisions. That's the real challenge."
